First oncologist appointment

Pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever

So Friday at 7:15 we had our first oncologist appointment. I must say after we thought about going to about every different oncologist at Blue Ridge Cancer Care and a few at Duke thankfully we found one that we both like on the first try…out of sheer luck too! We hadn’t considered Dr. Schertz but he had the first appointment so we got him picked for us, we love him. He is very down to earth, kind, and explains things very well! He spend about 1-1/2 with us on Friday morning and decided that if this was his body he would be admitted to the hospital and begin chemo that day instead of waiting until Monday. For a split second Josh was against this but thankfully without much persuasion on my part he changed his mind. We went straight across the road to the hospital to be admitted for 5 days. We were both so scared, I mean less than 3 weeks ago life was fine–Josh wasn’t feeling well but otherwise life was great now he was being put into the hospital for chemo! We both had not expected it to happen this fast, I mean we had planned on going to sperm bank route for kids in the future but at this point that is not an option, that is time that frankly we don’t have. The nurses are GREAT! There are no visiting hours on this floor and I have stayed with Josh the whole time. The first round of chemo started Friday about 2:30 pm. When they brought the first of 3 bags of chemo in we were both practically in tears. The chemo takes about 4-1/2 hours. The reason Josh was put in was because the cancer center is not open on weekends and on each round of chemo there are 5 straight days of chemo so he could have those ASAP he had to be put in.
